A Money Question
My Latest
If you have been following along, I have been providing more behind-the-scenes looks at how we plan for clients.
My latest dives into a scenario that we see quite often. A large payday followed by more questions than answers.
This video dives into planning, taxes, and spending from a big payday.
Someone Else’s Goals
I have the opportunity to speak with clients daily about things they want to do with their money.
Yet most of the time they haven’t thought about it.
Sure maybe there is a fun purchase that is top of mind or a lifestyle upgrade they have been wanting but the real goal isn’t clear.
Let me show you in another way ~ Our clients at Moment are either entrepreneurs, athletes, or key employees. They are the driven type, focused on taking their business to the next level, getting the next contract, or seeing their work rewarded.
While great for getting to the next level in their profession they don’t come up for air to smell the roses, see the progress, or frankly assess what it all means to often.
Honestly, I am not worried about them achieving financial success because they have the skills combined with the work ethic to make it happen.
No, what I worry about is that they will build something they didn’t mean to.
A life they:
Don’t Want
Rarely Enjoy
Barely Recognize
Think about it, from the time you are a little kid society teaches you what “success” is.
You then follow a roadmap followed previously to achieve that “success”.
Yet, what if that “success” has nothing to do with your goals?
Well…then you find yourself living a life to achieve someone else’s goals.
So today, I want to talk about how I realized this in my own life, how I think about it today, and the lesson you can learn from it.
Let’s dive in!

Defining Yours & Taking Action
If you asked my wife or my brothers what my personality is like chances are you would get a response something like this ~ He is either all in or all out and good luck changing his mind.
At this point in my life, I take a bit of pride in just being me. I am not afraid to go my own way, venture on the path least traveled, and make a few mistakes along the way.
Yet it wasn’t always like that. Let me rewind the clock 15 years.
In 2009, I had just gotten drafted by the Detroit Tigers and was crowned as the next great pitcher for the organization.
I then spent the next several years trying to be someone I wasn’t. I tried to be someone who conformed to everyone’s opinion and as such other’s expectations became my goals.
It was unfulfilling, drained my confidence, and after a while I barely recognized myself.
Coming out of that, I promised myself ~ never again to let other people’s expectations or goals interfere with the life I wanted to live.
While your story will look different, I would be willing to guess that at some point, you might have felt like you were living for someone else’s goals.
Here are three ways you can get clear, take action, and live the life you want.
The End
The best planning starts with the end in mind.
Consider this ~ You start working at a company and focus on the next promotion, pay raise, or award. I mean it makes sense, society is telling us that this is “success”.
Well before you do that, look down the office hallway at the most “successful” person in your career path.
Is that the life you want?
Does his/her perfect day look like yours?
Does the financial gain outweigh the sacrifices made?
Action Item: First get clear about what you want your future life to look like and then work your way backwards, not the other way around.
Next Month
Comparison is the thief of joy and something many of us struggle with (I know I certainly do).
No matter how much money you earn, success you achieve, or impact you make there will always be someone (at least in your mind) doing it better.
Consider this ~ One day you wake up and realize you have achieved the impossible…no one is making more money, achieving more success, or making a greater impact than you.
Even as I read that I think, honestly who cares. Yet I have spent many days focused on just that, eclipsing some silly comparison.
Instead, do this: Get clear on what you want your future life to look like (see above), and then focus on big rocks that need to be accomplished this month.
Examples can include:
Paying off debt
Learning a new skill
Making a key connection
Solving that recurring problem
Taking the risk you have been delaying
Action Item: There are 26 days left in October. What is one thing that if it were true your future goals would be within reach? Start working on that.
This Week
An ice cube melts at 32 degrees, yet if you were waiting for one to melt and it went from 0 degrees to 31 degrees you would see no progress.
Life is a lot like that, we chip away at things…thinking we are going nowhere only to realize the ice cube is getting closer to melting.
Consider this ~ Every action you take is either setting up your ice cube to melt or sending it further into a freeze. You won’t see the progress until it is impossible to ignore.
Your goals aren’t going to happen overnight (you are welcome for that incredible insight). But seriously, we need to hear that because we often act like they should.
No no no, it is going to take longer than you think, be harder than you imagined, and take showing up more times than you can count.
Action Item: Write down three things you are going to accomplish every day next week that will get you closer to the life you want.

My hope is you read this newsletter and consider what you want.
It is your life and the good news is you don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.
Your goals, ambitions, and actions should be unique to you.
Until next time my friends!

A Money Question
What are your top three goals with your money?
We spend so much time thinking about earning money and very little money thinking about spending it.
Spend some time today considering three future goals you have with your money.
Remember, not because someone else values it but because you do.
