The One That Got Away

You have either lived it or heard the story many times over.

The fish gets caught. It's a decent fish.

But by the third time, the story is passed around? That fish is a monster.

The water was rougher. The fight was longer. The fish grew six inches in the retelling.

Nobody's lying, exactly.

The story just… grows. Because…well, a bigger fish makes a better story.

Now here is the thing almost nobody says out loud:

Investment wins are fish stories.

Especially in the rooms you are starting to find yourself in.

The locker room. The founder dinner. The group chat full of people with money.

Someone always made a killing on something.

Today I want to talk about why those stories are so dangerous and why the people who are actually rich are usually the quietest ones in the room.

Let's dive in…

Quiet Wealth

"I made $10 million on this investment."

I have heard some version of that line more times than I can count.

And here is my honest first reaction now: did you, though?

Not because I think people are lying.

But because a brag is a headline. And headlines leave out the entire story.

So before you feel behind… before you feel like you're missing out… ask what the headline isn't telling you:

  • How much did they put in relative to everything they own?

  • What about the other nine bets that quietly went to zero?

  • Did they actually sell… or is this still just a number on a screen?

You're hearing about the one fish they caught.

You are not hearing about the dozen times they came home empty.

That is survivorship bias, and it is everywhere in money. The winners talk. The losers go quiet. So all you ever hear is winning, which makes everyone else feel like the only one not winning.

Now here is the part that took me a while to understand.

The wealthiest people I have worked with, and I have sat with hundreds of high and ultra-high-net-worth families, are almost never the loudest people in the room.

Their wealth is quiet.

It doesn't need an audience. It isn't a story they're performing at dinner.

So when money gets loud, I tend to think one thing: Why is this person telling me?

Sometimes it's a harmless ego.

Sometimes they're selling something.

And sometimes the brag is covering for the fact that the story isn't as good as it sounds.

For you, whether the money came from a contract, a deal, or a business, this matters more than almost anything.

Because the moment you have real money, your network fills up with "rich people" and big ideas.

And the pressure to keep up with the table becomes its own kind of trap.

But you don't have to win the table. You just have to quietly win.

Boring. Consistent. Yours.

The best investors I know aren't collecting stories.

They're compounding quietly while everyone else is telling stories about how big their fish was.

Until next time my friends!

Chart of the Week

Here is the data that should make every "I made a killing" story sit a little differently.

Since 1926, just over 4% of U.S. stocks created ALL of the net wealth the entire stock market produced; the other ~96% collectively did no better than holding Treasury bills. In fact, more than half of all stocks lost money versus simply sitting in cash.

The big winners are real. They are just extraordinarily rare, and they are the only ones anyone ever talks about at the dinner table.
